Global Developmental Delay (GDD) is a term used to describe a condition in which children experience significant delays in multiple areas of development compared to their peers. These areas of development include motor skills, speech and language, cognitive abilities, social and emotional skills, and activities of daily living. However, engaging children with GDD in activities tailored to their abilities and interests can promote their cognitive, physical, social, and emotional development. Some of these activities include:

           Sensory Play:

Provide sensory experiences such as playing with textured materials (e.g., sand, water beads, foam), exploring different textures and temperatures, or engaging in activities like finger painting, playing with playdough, or sensory bins filled with rice, beans, or other materials.

           Fine Motor Skills Activities:

Encourage activities that promote the development of fine motor skills, such as threading beads, lacing cards, sorting objects by size or color, using tongs or tweezers to pick up small items, or playing with building blocks or LEGO DUPLO.

           Gross Motor Skills Activities:

Plan activities that help develop gross motor skills, such as playing with balls (e.g., rolling, throwing, catching), crawling through tunnels, playing on playground equipment, dancing to music, or engaging in simple obstacle courses.

           Interactive Games:

Play simple interactive games that promote turn-taking, social skills, and communication, such as peek-a-boo, imitation games, simple board games with easy rules, or cooperative play activities like rolling a ball back and forth.

Pretend Play: Encourage imaginative play by providing dress-up clothes, dolls, stuffed animals, toy cars, kitchen sets, or other props that can inspire creative pretend play scenarios. Join in the play and encourage storytelling and role-playing.

           Music and Movement:

Engage children in music and movement activities that promote coordination, rhythm, and self-expression. Sing songs, play musical instruments (e.g., drums, shakers), dance to music, or participate in music therapy sessions tailored to their developmental needs.

When planning activities for children with GDD, it’s essential to consider their individual strengths, preferences, and developmental level. Additionally, providing plenty of encouragement, praise, and positive reinforcement can help motivate children and build their confidence as they engage in various activities.

Tourette syndrome is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by repetitive, involuntary movements and vocalizations known as tics. These tics can range from mild to severe and can significantly impact daily functioning, social interactions, and quality of life.

Reducing tics in Tourette syndrome involves a multifaceted approach that may include a combination of therapies, lifestyle adjustments, and support systems. Here are some strategies that individuals with Tourette syndrome might find helpful in managing their tics:

           Behavioural Therapies:

Behavioural therapies like habit reversal training (HRT) and exposure and response prevention (ERP) can help individuals become more aware of their tics and learn techniques to manage or redirect them. These therapies are often conducted by psychologists or therapists with experience in treating Tourette syndrome.

           Education and Support:

Learning about Tourette syndrome and connecting with support groups or communities can be empowering. It helps individuals and their families understand the condition better and provides a platform for sharing experiences and coping strategies.

           Stress Management:

Stress and anxiety can often exacerbate tics. Learning and practicing stress management techniques such as mindfulness, deep breathing exercises, yoga, or meditation can help reduce overall stress levels and potentially decrease tic severity.

           Healthy Lifestyle:

Encouraging a healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise, adequate sleep, and a balanced diet, can contribute to overall well-being and may help reduce tic frequency and severity in some individuals.

           Identify Triggers:

Identifying and avoiding triggers that worsen tics can be helpful. While triggers vary from person to person, common triggers may include stress, fatigue, caffeine, or certain medications.

           Acceptance and Understanding:

Accepting oneself and the condition can be crucial in managing Tourette syndrome. Developing a positive self-image and understanding that tics do not define one’s worth or identity can significantly improve mental well-being.

Overall, it is important for individuals with Tourette syndrome to receive support and understanding from family, friends, educators, and healthcare professionals. With proper management and support, many individuals with Tourette syndrome are able to lead fulfilling lives and successfully navigate the challenges associated with the condition.

While Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is often associated with challenges in attention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity, individuals with ADHD may also possess several strengths. It is important to recognize and appreciate these strengths, as they contribute to the unique qualities and capabilities of individuals with ADHD. Some strengths associated with ADHD may include:

           Creativity:

Many individuals with ADHD demonstrate high levels of creativity. They may think outside the box, come up with innovative ideas, and excel in creative pursuits such as art, writing, or problem-solving.

           Energy and Enthusiasm:

The high levels of energy associated with ADHD can be channelled positively. People with ADHD may exhibit enthusiasm and passion for projects and activities they find interesting, contributing to their motivation and drive.

           Hyperfocus:

While attention difficulties are common, some individuals with ADHD experience periods of hyperfocus. During these episodes, they can concentrate intensely on a specific task, often leading to increased productivity and quality of work.

           Adaptability:

Individuals with ADHD may be more adaptable and flexible in certain situations. They may thrive in environments that require quick thinking and the ability to adapt to changing circumstances.

           Intuition:

Some people with ADHD have heightened intuition and are able to make quick, insightful connections. They may possess a strong sense of intuition and be skilled at reading people and situations.

           Passion for Learning:

When individuals with ADHD are interested in a subject, they often display a deep passion for learning. They may become highly knowledgeable in areas that capture their attention.

Invisible disabilities refer to conditions or disorders that are not immediately visible or apparent to others. These disabilities may include chronic pain, mental health disorders, autoimmune disorders, neurological disorders, heart or lung diseases, and other conditions that affect a person’s ability to function normally.

4.4 million people live with an invisible disability in Australia. Because these conditions are not visible, people with invisible disabilities often face stigma, discrimination, and disbelief from others who do not understand their challenges. These challenges could include difficulty concentrating, memory problems, fatigue, anxiety, and limitations in physical abilities. It is important to help reduce this stigma and discrimination by practicing empathy and understanding toward individuals with invisible disabilities. This includes acknowledging the validity of their condition, being patient and respectful, and providing necessary accommodations and support.

It also helps to learn about invisible disabilities and understand that everyone has unique experiences and that people with invisible disabilities may experience their condition differently. Avoid using negative language or invalidating someone’s experience. Use person-first language, such as “a person with anxiety” rather than “an anxious person,” to avoid defining someone by their disability.

In addition, you can offer to help someone with an invisible disability in practical ways, such as with tasks they may find challenging or simply by being there to listen and offer emotional support. Furthermore, you can amplify their voices and advocate for policies that support individuals with invisible disabilities and ensure they receive equal treatment and opportunities. Overall, by creating a more inclusive and accepting environment, we can help individuals with invisible disabilities thrive and reach their full potential.

Parenting a child with autism spectrum disorder can have its challenges. However, approaching parenting in a different way to suit your child’s needs and help with their development, can be helpful in overcoming challenges. In this blog post, we provide some suggestions on how parents can create the right home and learning environment to help improve their child with Autism’s development.

           Educate yourself on Autism

It helps to become educated about the signs and symptoms of autism and how to manage these to understand your child better. There are many resources available to learn about autism. For example, you could talk to a health professional or doctor, do research on the internet or read books.

           Join a support group

It can help to connect with a support group to gain awareness and support. There are many support groups available for parents of children with autism, available online or in person.

           Use Positive Reinforcement

Praise your child on behaviours they do well. However, it is important to let your child know exactly what you praised them for. You could give them a reward for good behaviour, for example a sticker or extra playtime.

Accept your child for who they are

Do not focus on the differences your child may have to other children, focus on all their qualities and quirks they have. Accept and love your child for who they are. It is important to be patient and understanding with them.

           Look at your child’s strengths

Many children with autism will have strengths in certain activities. Find out what your child’s strengths are and help and encourage them to pursue these activities.

1. Accessibility Accommodations

            – Disabled employees may need a range of accommodations to assist them at work. Some examples of accommodations include assistive technology, modifications to their workstation, and physical access to the workplace.

           2. Training

            – Developing a training program specifically designed to offer guidance and educate all employees on disability etiquette, accommodations, and accessibility issues.

           3. Review Policies

            – To determine whether a policy is inclusive of employees with disabilities, all policies and procedures of the company should be reviewed. Eliminate any language that excludes or discriminates against people with disabilities.

           4. Foster a Positive and Inclusive Workplace Culture

            – When employees feel appreciated and valued, it leads to greater employee satisfaction and overall productivity. Creating an inclusive work culture by valuing diversity and actively promoting the importance of creating a disability-accessible workplace.

           5. Building Networks

            – Creating a culture that is supportive of people with disabilities, establishing disability-related affinity groups, and parenting with community organisations to provide networking opportunities for people with disabilities.

           6. Offer Flexibility

            – Flexible work arrangements, such as telecommuting or flexible hours, can help employees with disabilities manage their work and health needs.

Dementia affects the brain in different ways, some people with dementia may engage in aggressive behaviour. Some examples of aggressive behaviours include swearing, shouting, making threats, physical violence against another person and hitting objects. This can be distressing for people to see their loved ones with dementia acting this way. It is important to understand that it is not the person’s fault they are reacting that way, they can’t help how their brain is functioning. However, there are things you can do to help people with dementia manage and prevent their aggressive behaviour.

First, it is important to identify the triggers of what is causing the person with dementia’s aggressive behaviour. Find out what happened before their outburst. For example, they may be having trouble communicating and may be acting out of frustration, therefore it is important to remain patient and calm with them when they are communicating with you. Or you could have approached them in a way that scared them, which has caused them to become aggressive. Once you know the triggers that are causing the aggressive behaviour, you will be able to avoid activating these triggers in the future.

In addition, creating a calm environment for the person with dementia, can help relieve their outbursts. For example, stimulating and loud environments could be making them feel uncomfortable and unsafe. By ensuring they are in a safe and quiet environment will help them remain calm. It also may help to distract them when they are feeling agitated. You could offer to go for a walk with them, have something to eat or ask for their help with something. If you are still having trouble calming them down, seek help from a family member or friend, someone that they respond well too, who may be able to help calm them down. It also may help to seek advice from a doctor or a counsellor.

A career as a disability support worker can be highly rewarding yet challenging, as there are certain qualities that are important to being a good support worker. In this blog, we will discuss what we believe are five qualities a good support worker should possess.

           Empathetic

A good support worker is empathetic. Being empathetic involves putting yourself in the other person’s shoes so you can better understand how the person is feeling and what is making them feel that way. It involves listening to the other person’s needs and showing you care. It also helps in building a trusting relationship between the support worker and their client.

           Patient

Some clients may take longer to complete tasks; therefore, it is important for the support worker to remain patient and calm. It involves empowering the client through constantly encouraging them and assisting them when they need help. This will help the client to feel comfortable, independent and supported by the support worker.

           Respectful

A good support worker is respectful towards their client. This involves treating their client as an equal, respecting their feelings and needs. It also involves asking the client what their goals are, how they want to achieve them and helping the client become more independent.

           Adaptable

A client’s needs and wants can change regularly, so it is important for a support worker to be able to adapt to different situations and people. This also involves remaining calm under pressure and being able to reassure the client when they are feeling stressed or anxious.

           Positive

Client’s will have days where they may be thinking negatively, therefore it is important for a support worker to remain positive and supportive with the client. This involves encouraging and motivating the client to achieve their goals. Positivity also helps in improving the client’s confidence and self-esteem.

Self-love means that you accept yourself fully and you treat yourself with kindness and respect. Studies have shown when you practice self-love, you are more motivated to take on new challenges. It can also help reduce stress and increase your resilience and self-efficacy. In our blog post, we share tips on how you can practice self-love.

           Set boundaries.

It is okay to take some time alone and say no to others sometimes. This does not make you selfish. Self-love can help you place healthy boundaries in relationships where you respect yourself and feel respected by others.

           Get to know yourself.

Ask yourself what you love about yourself, what and who makes you happy, and what you think your best qualities are. It may help to write it in a journal or say it out loud to yourself.

           Practice self-care.

It is important to look after your physical and mental health. Eat healthy, exercise regularly, and engage in activities that bring you joy. If you are feeling bored in your current routine, you could try a new hobby.

           Be kind to yourself.

When you feel yourself starting to think something negative about yourself, think about what you would say to your loved one if they were in your situation. Also, forgive yourself if you make a mistake, you are only human. This can help you be compassionate and kind to yourself.

           Protect yourself.

Surround yourself with positive people who you feel safe and supported with. Don’t waste your time on people who put you down. You will love and respect yourself more for it.

           Stop comparing yourself to others.

There is only one you and you are unique and important. Focus on yourself and your journey in life. This will help you feel freer.

In today’s society, interabled couples are becoming the norm. This may be due to more couples in interabled relationships sharing their relationship stories publicly and movies are starting to portray people with disabilities more. Interabled relationships are when people with different abilities form a romantic relationship. However, there is still stigma around people who are in interabled relationships. In this blog post, we address this stigma and discuss how we can become more educated and accepting of people in interabled relationships.

A common stigma around interabled relationships is that people with disabilities cannot find or experience love. This is not true. Everyone can experience love and can form romantic relationships. We are all human, with the same desires for human connection. A disability doesn’t make one less worthy of having a romantic relationship. Everyone deserves to love and be loved.

Another common stigma is around people thinking someone with a disability’s partner must be their caregiver. This is not true; their partner should treat them as equal. A person with a disability is not a burden to their partner either. Both parties will have to work hard in loving and supporting one another. Communicating and setting boundaries is the key to all healthy relationships.

It is also important to understand that one’s disability does not define a person. People with disabilities just want to be accepted and treated normally. We are all different and complex human beings. Look at the person for who they are, not their disability. We hope you have found this blog post helpful.
